Cultivating Manhood

May 31, 2016
By Jim Cochran

I had the privilege of teaching in a high school Bible class for a few days last week.  The classroom was full of young men, and part of the opening of their class was for one of them to share a devotional. I was blessed and impressed by the mature approach each student brought to their sharing and the insights and challenges they shared from the Word of God. The first day was a challenge to be excellent in all you do; the second devotion focused on having healthy relationships.

I was reminded of Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 16 as he was closing his letter to the church in Corinth: “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love.” (V13)

Be men of courage. These words evoke thoughts of resolve, stamina, determination, integrity, and high principles. Robert Lewis in his book, Raising a Modern-Day Knight, noted profound results in the boys being raised by his group of friends after they decided to focus their attention on three core concepts- a vision for manhood, a code of conduct, and a transcendental cause.

At Liberty Christian School, we are teaching the Christian message that readily provides a unified focus of these concepts. The vision for manhood is to be like Jesus Christ. The code of conduct is found in the Bible. Jesus claimed that the transcendental cause is “…If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” Luke 9:23-24

I am thankful to see our students taking hold of manhood and pray they continue to pursue a growing relationship with their Savior.
